Retreats and Seminars

After teaching Christian Formation on Sunday mornings and in small group Bible studies at other times for the past twenty-five years, I can customize those offerings to various audiences and topics. Please contact me. I would love to discuss this with you. The following are retreats I have recently given:

Biblical Listening

Dietrich Bonhoeffer said, “The first service that one owes to others in the fellowship consists in listening to them. Just as love to God begins with listening to His Word, so the beginning of love for the brethren is learning to listen to them.”  This seminar looks at the power of listening in the Bible and in our current world as well as how to listen to yourself, others, the world, and God. I include observations from personal history, media clips, and some practical pointers on how to become a better listener.

Forgiveness

Recent studies have shown that our society seems to have a marked increase in anger that is recognizable. This also means that we have to learn truly how to forgive others and ourselves while maintaining appropriate boundaries. This seminar looks at what healthy forgiveness is, what forgiveness is not, and how we are able to do it in a broken world. Some powerful media clips are included to help bring the topic alive.

Resting in God

With the advent of the smart phone, we can be reached at all hours of the day and night by almost anyone for just about anything. This has led most of us, including real seekers, to find that we are far too busy and not able to really “love God and enjoy Him forever” (The Westminster Confession). This seminar will discuss biblical roots of Sabbath rest, how it is still relevant today, and practical ways to incorporate “God’s rest” into our lives right now. Poetry, music, and video clips are part of this much needed message.

Popcorn Theology

Marcia and her husband, Tom, who has been a priest in the Episcopal Church for over twenty-five years, give this offering together. We look for Christian themes in movies and television. We have done this as an adult forum offering during Oscar season and in another setting where we have concentrated on particular types of clips, i.e. Christmas movies during December. We use current and old clips as well as some obscure findings to tweak your film knowledge. This seminar is often fun as well as powerful.

Advent Retreat: Journey to Jesus

Many of us long for a return to a more meaningful Christmas and Advent but are overwhelmed by the culture’s message of commercialism and activity. With music, art, literature, and scripture, Marcia helps us say no to the season’s focus on busyness and muchness. Instead, she looks at how seasons of life affect us while taking a new look at the nativity story and offering a poignant prayer for the New Year.
